One person was transported to the hospital with injuries after a crash in Fort Myers early Sunday.

The Fort Myers Fire Department said they responded to the crash at 4:36 a.m. on Forum and Ravello Boulevard.

Upon arrival, units found a vehicle that had crashed into a light pole.

WINK News spoke to a man who believes he was in the right place at the right time and was able to help. Dre Roberts was driving down Forum Boulevard just after 4:30 a.m. with a friend when they spotted the debris.

“So I slowed down. And then as I slowed down, inched up a couple inches a little bit. My light shined on a vehicle in the middle of the road,” Robert said.

On scene, you could hear screams and then sirens. This is because Roberts says, there was a 23-year-old woman trapped inside that car.

“She was unconscious, but my friend was talking to her and she came to and yeah, she started screaming, but I called 911,” said Roberts.

Fort Myers Fire Chief Tracy McMillion says his crews were there in about six minutes. “The call came in roughly about 4:36 in the morning, our crews were able to respond,” said McMillion.

Once there, crews noticed the engine of the car was on fire and in the middle of the road. “But the vehicle itself was off to to the side there and which had the… the driver of [and] the occupant of the vehicle there. So quickly, they made the decision to go to the patient, because we always want to do life safety first,” Chief McMillion said.

Fire crews worked to extricate the passenger. and did so quickly. The passenger was transported to the hospital. But, Roberts wonders, if he and his friend had not been around, who would have called 911? He says they were the only people there from start to finish.

“Whoo. That’s exactly what I was thinking like, ‘Man wish she had came to you know,’ like if we would not have been driving down that street at that. And it was early so yeah, so,” said Roberts. Nevertheless, he’s glad fate brought him there.

The condition of the driver is not known at this time. This crash is still under investigation.
